An Early AM Collision

At about 4 AM on Wednesday, Feb. 22nd, the  30-year-old female driver and her companion were headed down East I-94 near Exit 145 “at full speed,” according to Michigan State Police.

They were headed in the wrong direction.

That’s when, just west of the Sargent Road exit, they struck a tractor-trailer head-on and square-on and were fatally injured. The truck driver was hospitalized with minor injuries. It took over seven hours to clear the scene and open I-94.

Night Driving can be Dangerous Driving

While it’s not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in this crash, it’s a well known fact that late at night there are more inebriated and/or medicated people on the highways. Bars can close anywhere from 2 AM to 4 AM in the lower 48 states, and between 4 AM and 5 AM in Hawaii and Alaska, respectively.

Older drivers cannot see as well at night, and any driver at any age can develop eye issues.

Truck drivers need to have their eyes checked as well by medical professionals. In addition, they should be periodically trained in driving at night.

Know the Facts

Besides learning about night driving techniques, drivers should understand fatigue management and the effects of fatigue at different ages and stages of their lives.

Did you know the driver most vulnerable and at-risk to suddenly nodding off while driving is a young man in his early 20s? A driver in this age range can more easily fall asleep as the night wears on, while driving in fog, or starting out tired.

Drivers need to know about the signs of fatigued driving: changes in lane position or speed, impaired driving performance (poor gear changes, slower reaction times, etc.), and physical signs as yawning, heavy or pinched eyes, irritability, etc.

Seriously . . .

Like the crash above, night time accidents are more likely to be serious crashes. If a truck driver falls asleep, there is no telling where he could end up.

The best personal advice I’ve received about night driving is to simply stop before you’re too tired. It’s not easy these days to find a good rest area to park.

So know the signs of sleep, and pull over. Drivers need to be alert not only to protect themselves, but to respond to the mistakes of others.

Rest up, buckle up, and shut down when you have the need.

Professionals Know the Limits

Professional truck drivers are concerned about safety, their personal safety and the safety of those around them. They have one goal and only one goal in mind: getting there—safely.

Professional truck drivers are constantly checking their trucks. Every time they stop, they do a quick walk around the truck before hitting the road. They check the tires, the lights, load securement, and, if they are out of view of the truck— the coupling release.

Professional truck drivers are constantly checking the road, their mirrors, the road, their gauges, the road, the mirrors, the road, and so on.

Professional truck drivers are in control of their vehicles 100% of the time. They are extremely careful of vehicle placement in their lanes and in turns, wheel slippage in adverse conditions, and when their body tells them to slow down or even stop.

In short, professional truck drivers know their limits. They know the limits of the equipment they are driving, the road they are driving on, and they know their personal limitations.

X-Ray Vision

One limit is night driving. Night driving brings with it all kinds of special challenges as nighttime glare, vulnerability to sleep or sleep-like states and its associated decreased alertness, limitations of headlights, etc. which contribute to the inability to see nighttime hazards. This is especially a concern in turns or cresting hills, when the vehicle’s headlights are not pointing straight ahead.

Ask any experienced EMT or First Responder and they will tell you some of the worst crashes they ever saw have occurred at night. Sometimes the crash involves farm equipment with no lighting, large animals on the road, or “pranks” as leaving large stones, huge tires, or even construction equipment (like a bulldozer) on the roadway for unsuspecting drivers to hit. On a turn or in a dip in the road, at night many hazards are almost impossible for any driver to see. Or, at times, other drivers may fail to see and yield right of way to the truck.

New truck safety technology as in the video above or the Detroit Assurance™ system, in my opinion, will add another layer of protection for the professional truck driver. With the high costs of collisions including downtime, increased regulatory oversight and insurance cost, the new Collision Warning and Braking systems will contribute to safer, efficient operations.

A Highway Angel

It was about 2:30AM, April 26, 2014. Boyd Miles, 42, was a team driver with his cousin Christopher Crandall, 23, when their truck broke down on  I-15 outside of Lehi, Utah. The two men were standing on the passenger side of truck between the truck and the jersey barriers when a Honda Civic driven by James Warren, 27, of Lehi drifted off the side of the road. The driver of the Civic had fallen asleep. Crandall recalls someone yelling “Watch out!,” before waking up paralyzed from waist down. It was Miles who had yelled and attempted to push his cousin out of the way, but was fatally stuck. Miles was survived by his wife and young daughter. For his actions, Miles was recently named a “Highway Angel” by the Truckload Carriers Association.

Facts about Night Driving

(1.) Accident-related death rates are 3 times greater at night, and driving after dark can increase the risk of crashing. Some of the worst crashes occur at night.

(2.) Driving at night can be dangerous:

  • Decreased visibility: it’s harder to see people, motorcycles, signs, etc.
  • Decreased depth perception to see oncoming vehicles or to judge distances.
  • Older drivers need more light; some drivers are afflicted with night blindness (nyctalopia).
  • At night there is more construction activity during the week and more drunk drivers on the weekend. Weekend nights are the most likely part of the week for fatal accidents, according to the National Safety Council.
  • Cyclists are difficult to spot, as their lights are not as powerful as cars. It can also be more difficult to spot the single headlight of a motorcyclist at night if they are around cars.
  • Hazards often seem to appear out of nowhere.

Night Driving Tips

(1) See and be Seen

  •  Keep your windshield clean and carry extra windshield wash.
  • Clean  your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals and make sure all lights are in proper working order.
  • Turn your lights on earlier rather than later. Put your headlights on about an hour before the sun goes down.
  • Don’t “overdrive” your headlights; be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.

(2) Avoid Nighttime Glare

  • Don’t look at oncoming headlights. Instead focus on the right side of the road near the white lines.
  • Dim your interior lights to avoid glare.

(3) Drive defensively

  • Signal your intentions clearly.
  • Expect the unexpected from drivers around you.
  • Slow down and increase your following distance.
  • Pay extra attention to your surroundings.

(4) Plan the trip in advance

  • Share the driving, if possible, with another, well-rested driver.
(5) Prevent Underride
Generally underride accidents (where a car goes under a trailer) occur at night and represent one quarter of the fatalities from truck-involved collisions. Factors contributing to underride include:
  • Inoperative or dirty lights on the trailer’s side,
  • Bright lights and/or bright sign-boards from a fuel station or truck stop near the side of the road.
  • A very slow-moving CMV or truck,
  • A truck making a left turn or backing across traffic.
Factors that can contribute to rear under-ride include:
  • Inoperative, dirty, or dim taillights,
  • Taillights placed very close together,
  • Failure to properly use reflective triangles when parked or broken down on or near the road, and
  • Failure to use emergency flashers when entering or exiting the highway at slow speeds. (Source: Dr. John C. Glennon)
